[1] In Egypt, large Greek communities were established since mid-19 century and were able to retain their Greek identity, but also accepted other European cultures and were generally multilingual. In addition to the spoken Greek language, many spoke French, Italian, Arabic (Egyptian) and English. The Greek population was the largest of the Southern European settlers who had moved to that part of North East Africa because of the abundance of employment in commerce, trade and other opportunities that were gaining momentum late 19th century and early 20th century. In Melbourne in 1950 a small number of Greeks who arrived from Egypt in conjunction with a small number of Greek migrants from other parts of the Middle East (Palestine, Sudan etc), formed the EEAMA League, which we now know as the Club EEAMA (Greeks from Egypt & the Middle East).
